DBT stands
for Dialectical Behavior Therapy, a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
(CBT) which was developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. Generally, CBT focuses on
how thoughts and feelings influence our behavior. DBT builds upon this
foundation, with a focus on our interactions with people and the environment.
The general goal is to learn and refine skills in changing
behavioral, emotional, and thinking patterns associated with problems in life,
that is, those causing misery and distress.
This
is a weekly class that is held every Thursday from 11 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on the
Butler Hospital Campus in the Ray Conference Center, upstairs in room 3. Butler Hospital
is located at 345 Blackstone Blvd,
Providence RI,
02906. You may bring
a small lunch with you; food and beverages are not provided.
This
class is free of charge and open to all women who want to be supported and
validated by other women as we learn to use the DBT skills together. If you
have any questions, just call our information line at 401-365-4DBT
(401-365-4328).
The class organizers, Kathryn and Melissa, have both spent
years learning and living DBT skills. Neither of us are mental health
professionals.
MDDA-RI does recognize the need for a DBT Skills Self-Help Class for men, and intends to offer one in the future.
